June 19, 2006—It looks like a rainbow that's been set on fire, but this phenomenon is as cold as ice.Known in the weather world as a circumhorizontal arc, this rare sight was caught on film on June 3 as it hung over northern Idaho near the Washington State border

The arc isn't a rainbow in the traditional sense—it is caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). What's more, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground.

When light enters through a vertical side face of such an ice crystal and leaves from the bottom face, it refracts, or bends, in the same way that light passes through a prism. If a cirrus's crystals are aligned just right, the whole cloud lights up in a spectrum of colors.

This particular arc spanned several hundred square miles of sky and lasted for about an hour, according to the London Daily Mail.

On Monday.. there was a degree student in NIE who attempted suicide.. it was a great spectacle.. quite a number of people gathered.. myself included. what's sad is that some of the spectators instead of showing concern, they were mocking the guy.. quite a number of people even said, "aiyah! chey!! three storeys high only.. he won't die one lah" .. how did we get to this.. a society that doesn't care. one group even wanted to bet to see if he's going to jump. that moment.. there was so much speculations going in my head.. what is he thinking at that particular moment in time? what happened? what caused him to be fatalistic? i really feel sorry for him..

then.. the PE started carrying the gym mats from the gym room to the place that the guy was going to jump. i helped too.. while i was carrying the gym mats and approaching near where the guy was going to jump.. i felt a rush of emotions.. i felt so sad.. so sad that some people cannot cope with whatever that they are going through.. and i feel sorry that they feel there's no one to turn to.. that's why they feel its better for them to end it all. i was just so afraid that he might jump right in front of the spot that i'm bringing the mat to..

after sending the mat.. i was shaking.. i really felt scared.. perhaps because of the close proximity to someone who might leave this world any moment then.. while i was walking away from the scene.. the guy was rescued by the SCDF personnels. i really felt relieved.. it was a close brush with death.. now the guy is in for a more difficult time than before.. we were speculating that he would be charged for attempted suicide.. and his bond with MOE would be broken too.. which means he need to pay the liquidated damages..

looking back.. i really feel sorry for him… i won't say that suicidal people are stupid.. many people think that those who have suicidal thoughts are stupid.. we can't and shouldn't judge them.. who have no idea what they are going through.. what good can it do just by judging them? a more constructive use of our time would be to help them isn't it? the act of committing suicide is considered rash because perhaps viability of alternative solutions has not been exhausted and so the person has not exhausted his opportunities to survive his ordeals..
